Greetings, football supporters! Join us for the fifth week of the National Football League season, where I'll deliver live coverage from the early games. This is a nice mid-morning start on the Pacific coast at 10am (PST), stretching to an early evening 6pm (BST) in the UK. Recently, the Vikings mounted a comeback to defeat the Browns 21-17 thanks to a 12-yard Jordan Addison scoring catch with just 25 seconds left at the London venue. The Vikings move to three wins and two losses, while Cleveland drop to 1-4. Today's slate is in full swing.
We have a healthy lineup of 6 matchups to track:
Ravens v Texans
Panthers v Dolphins
Colts v Las Vegas Raiders
New Orleans Saints v New York Giants
New York Jets v Cowboys
Eagles vs Denver Broncos
The BIG game is taking place in Philly with the unbeaten reigning champions receiving a visit from Denver. On paper, you might expect an easy win, but a quick search reveals reports questioning whether the Philadelphia are the worst 4-0 team ever. Who knows. However, is they have enjoyed some fortune on special teams with three blocked kicks, including one that secured a win against the Rams. The key battle will be how Denver defensive coordinator Vance Joseph dials up his defense to stop the Eagles' dual threat quarterback Hurts from marauding down the field. If they can make them throw, then a statement win might follow for the Broncos, currently 2-2, which would make many analysts, including me, that predicted the Broncos would overthrow the Chiefs in the AFC West feeling more optimistic.
In other games, a host of teams with single victories are eager to move nearer to .500 with a win, or exactly there in the case of the Dallas Cowboys after their wild 40-40 tie with the Packers has them at 1-2-1. Their visit to the New Jersey to face the yet to win New York Jets should secure a win as they aim to keep the scoring outbursts flowing between QB Prescott and receiver Pickens. Ultimately, star pass catcher Lamb's absence might actually help the Dallas as his expanded duties recently will have accelerated his development, making the offense stronger when he comes back. In the here and now, the Jets’ backfield needs to be alert and even more to prevent a disappointing fall to zero wins and five losses.
A pair of unexpected teams with one win and three losses go head-to-head in Maryland as the banged-up Baltimore Ravens are led into battle with the Houston Texans by reserve QB Rush. When these teams met previously, we saw Beyoncé’s stupendous half-time show bookended by Houston suffering a horrendous 31-2 loss at their stadium on Christmas Day, followed by a decisive whipping in the postseason a few weeks after at Baltimore. But, without the injured two-time MVP Jackson on the field, who threw four touchdowns, scored three scores, and racked up massive yardage across the two thrashings, Houston’s defense will be confident.
