Governor Noem Inspects Oregon ICE Office With MAGA Influencers

Kristi Noem, who holds the position of the head of the Department of Homeland Security, visited the federal immigration enforcement location in the city of Portland on a recent weekday. On site, she witnessed a modest protest outside, which stands in stark contrast to the intense "blockade" alleged by Donald Trump.

Accompanied by Right-Wing Media Figures

The secretary was accompanied by a trio of conservative influencers who were driven from the local airport to the facility in her security detail. DHS has recently produced more aggressive social media content featuring federal agents carrying out immigration raids and firing crowd control measures at demonstrators.

Demonstration Details

Local law enforcement secured the area outside the building in the southern Portland area before the governor's arrival. Several individuals, featuring one wearing a costume of a chicken and another as a sea creature, were kept at a distance.

A song blared from a demonstration site down the street, with lyrics referencing Trump and controversial documents. Someone called out to a federal recorder recording from the facility's roof, questioning whether the homeland security had been referred to as the "information ministry".

Press Coverage

Journalists from independent media organizations were also kept at the security perimeter outside, while the partisan influencers in the secretary's group—the conservative trio—broadcast social media updates of the governor participating in federal officers in a prayer session inside, giving a pep talk, and telling a member of the Oregon National Guard to "Be ready".

Legal and Political Context

The secretary has supported the Trump's assertions that the handful of individuals—who have assembled in their dozens outside the ICE facility since recent months, including one in an frog outfit—are "terrorists" who have placed the building "under siege", making the use of federal troops essential.

However, on Saturday, a U.S. judge in the city halted his effort to nationalize the state's guard, determining that the his assertions that the largely peaceful city was "being destroyed" were "untethered to the facts".

The next day, the same judge, Judge Immergut—who was nominated to the bench by the former president—broadened the ruling to prevent National Guard troops from other states from being sent in the city. The judge ruled after he reacted to her initial ruling by seeking to deploy members of the another state's militia to Oregon.

Escalating Tensions

Since Donald Trump highlighted the small but persistent protest outside the office and made inaccurate statements that the city is "battle-scarred", a growing number of his supporters, including conservative personalities, have arrived to confront the demonstrators.

Some of these confrontations have resulted in scuffles and brawls, prompting apprehensions by the local law enforcement. Nick Sortor was one of those detained after he tried to force his way a demonstration site on a pavement near the site and was engaged in a fight over an national banner. The influencer had before removed the flag from a protester who was setting it on fire.

The charges against Sortor were eventually dismissed after an protest in conservative media led the chief of the legal unit of the Department of Justice, the division head, to suggest a review of the law enforcement agency over alleged political bias.

Female protesters Sortor was involved in an altercation with still face charges.

Official Responses

Over the weekend, the state's governor, she, alleged government personnel in the office of trying to irritate the demonstrators by using unnecessary levels of tear gas in a local community and inviting partisan figures to film the crowd from the upper level of the facility. "Their actions are meant to provoke," Kotek said.

Three of those conservative influencers were referred to in a police report last month as "opposing demonstrators" who "constantly return and antagonize the demonstrators until they are assaulted or exposed to irritants" and refuse "repeated advice from law enforcement to stay away from" the protesters.

Social Media Updates

One influencer, a previous media worker who changed careers as a right-wing commentator after being dismissed from BuzzFeed for ethical violations, shared a clip of Governor Noem observing from the upper level of the ICE facility at the limited number of protesters below, including Jack Dickinson who wears a bird outfit to taunt Trump. The influencer described the clip of the secretary inspecting the peaceful setting below: "DHS Secretary Kristi Noem stares down army of Antifa and a guy in a chicken suit".

Regardless of the contrast between the allegations from Trump and Noem that this ICE field office is "besieged" from "domestic terrorists" and clear visual evidence of a limited group of individuals in harmless costumes, the personalities with Noem continued to refer to the group as harmful activists.

Meeting with Police Chief

During her visit, Governor Noem also engaged with the Portland police chief, the chief, who has been depicted as "woke" in right-wing outlets for allowing his officers to apprehend Nick Sortor. In a online post on the discussion, the influencer asserted that the police head had "sided with violent ANTIFA militants confronting journalists and officers outside ICE facility".

Her security detail then left the facility past a few of protesters on the exterior, including one wearing a bear wearing a headgear.
