Boston Mayor Mayor Wu Addresses Trump's Warning to Relocate World Cup Games from City

The mayor of Boston, Mayor Wu, suggested that the city was ready for a dispute with President Donald Trump concerning his assertion that he could instruct FIFA to remove World Cup games from the stadium in Foxborough, situated approximately 35 kilometers south-west of Boston.

Wu spoke on a Boston-based podcast recently to address comments from the Trump administration, which had described her as "radical left." Trump had warned that he would contact FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "address its issues."

A great deal of it is locked down by contract so that no single person, even if they live in the White House, can undo it.

She continued, "We're in a world where for attention, for control, to test limits ... ongoing threats ... are directed at individuals and communities who stand their ground and submit or follow along to a divisive plan."

Mayor Wu also remarked, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, unfortunately, we are going to be part of a discussion that is challenging Boston's values." Wu concluded by stressing her support for the city, declaring, "Fully committed for Boston."

The President's Comments and FIFA's Role

Earlier this week, Infantino was photographed with Trump at the Gaza summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. Infantino has also been to the Oval Office and given World Cup tournament and club championship trophies to Trump as presents.

On Tuesday, President Trump was asked about unrest in a Boston neighborhood that involved a police vehicle being set on fire. Trump responded, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni – the head of FIFA, who's phenomenal."

He added, "I'd tell him: 'Let's move into another location' and they would comply. He might not prefer it. But he would do it without hesitation." Trump also directly criticized Mayor Wu, stating, "Boston's mayor is not good ... she's radical left, and they're taking over some areas in Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"

Previous Warnings and 2026 World Cup Information

President Trump has previously suggested that he would have the same conversation with the FIFA president about relocating matches from Seattle and San Francisco, which are among the 16 host cities across North America.

The United States is joint hosts the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada. The expanded tournament is planned to be held from June 11 to July 19 in the coming year.
